Powered by Honda's 1.5-litre turbo V6 in the final season before turbos were banned, the MP4/4 put Senna and Prost in the same garage and turned 1988 into a private war between them. Senna took eight wins and his first World Championship in it, and the low, impossibly slender chassis became the defining shape of the era.

Behind the car his own helmet fills the field against open blue, the yellow shell and green stripes that became as recognisable as anything he drove.
